Public Hearing Notice- State Monitor Semi-Annual Report Update, Tuesday, July 21, 2026

Mount Vernon, NY – The Mount Vernon City School District was appointed an academic monitor by the New York State Education Department and will hold a Public Hearing for the State Monitor’s Annual Update. The hearing will take place from 6:00 p.m. 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, in the Board Room at the Education Center, located at 165 N. Columbus Avenue, Mount Vernon, New York 10553. Individuals who are unable to attend the hearing in person may submit comments via email to kyoungwilkins@mtvernoncsd.org with “State Monitor” in the subject line.

Physical exam reminder for fall sports 2026-27

All students interested in playing fall sports should make sure they have an up to date physical. You may go to your own physician, or physicals will be offered at the high schools. Athletes must do their physical at the school building they will attend in the Fall.​

Mount Vernon Recreation Department’s Summer Basketball Clinic: July 6 to August 14 at MVHS

Mount Vernon Recreation Department’s Summer Basketball Clinic: July 6 to August 14 at Mount Vernon High School. Sessions are 1 to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The clinic is open to ages 6 to 16 and costs $100 per week or $550 for all 6 weeks. You can sign up at the City Hall Recreation Department, by scanning the QR code, or by clicking here.

Pre-K 4 Early Registration and Pre-K 3 Lottery to open now!

Pre-K 4 early registration and the Pre-K 3 lottery application for the 2026-2027 school year are open now! Pre-K 4 Early Registration will be open from March 2 to June 19, 2026. The Pre-K 3 lottery will be open March 1 to June 19, 2026.

Longtime MVCSD educator Anjanette Brown appointed as principal of Denzel Washington School of the Arts

Denzel Washington School of the Arts’ new principal, Anjanette Brown, is a dedicated educational leader with 20 years of service in the Mount Vernon City School District, committed to creating schools where students are empowered, supported, and prepared to achieve their highest potential. Throughout her career, she has remained steadfast in her belief that education must nurture the whole child.

Leaders from the Mount Vernon Parent Teacher Association (PTA), parent liaisons, and school board trustees participated in the New York State PTA Summer Leadership Conference held on July 18-19 in Albany, NY. This annual event provided a valuable opportunity for attendees to engage in workshops designed to enhance their skills and collaboration efforts to better support students and families in the Mount Vernon City School District.

STEAM Academy student Kylie Jewelz Robinson earns coveted spot in inaugural Healthcare Academy

When the Mayo Clinic selected just 100 high school students nationwide for its inaugural Pre-College Healthcare Academy, Mount Vernon STEAM Academy student Kylie Jewelz Robinson earned one of those coveted spots. The rising junior earned a full scholarship to attend the highly selective program hosted by the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science at the University of Minnesota Rochester. Running from July 12 through July 24, the academy introduces students to careers in medicine through hands-on learning, mentorship and immersive experiences with healthcare professionals.

Mount Vernon STEAM Academy Principal Joseph Engelhardt brings vast experience to new role

Joseph Engelhardt, the principal of Mount Vernon STEAM Academy, brings more than two decades of educational leadership and classroom experience to his new role. He began his career as a teacher in New York City, where he taught mathematics, science and finance to students in Brooklyn and Manhattan while coaching a variety of athletic programs. Those early experiences shaped his belief that strong relationships, high expectations and meaningful opportunities empower students to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Lottery for UPK-3 hosted at Board of Education

For the sixth year, the Mount Vernon City School District is offering prekindergarten for three-year-olds (UPK-3). A lottery was held on Thursday afternoon for the upcoming 2026-27 school year to occupy the 60 spots available.

It has been my honor to serve this community and work toward building a brighter future for all of us. This was a successful year, and I want you to know that every bit of it was felt and heard. We faced real challenges and grew stronger because of them, and the progress we made together touched me deeply. It belonged to every family, student, teacher, and staff member who showed up and gave this district their best.
