Mount Vernon STEAM Academy celebrates at Spanish Language Fair

Music filled the Mount Vernon STEAM Academy auditorium, as the school celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a lively festival called "Sabor Latinos," on Friday, October 18, 2024. Students filled the seats for an afternoon of music, dancing and singing.

Assistant Principal Edwin Alexander and Kaylin Vidaurre, 12th-grade student and Class of 2024 historian and communications director, served as masters of ceremonies.

“This is a very diverse school; all students are accepted at STEAM,” said Principal Dr. Christopher Pearce in his welcoming remarks. “Everyone is welcome at STEAM. We do not discriminate; we love our students here. I live in Mount Vernon, and why do I love Mount Vernon? I love Mount Vernon because it is so diverse.”

The event featured live salsa dancing led by Mr. Frantz Barbier from the Research Foundation of City University of New York.

Students showcased their talents with performances of various Hispanic dances, complemented by heartfelt singing from Dr. Venezuela-Cervantes. A live DJ provided vibrant Latino music throughout the festival.

The MVSA planning committee worked together with local restaurants and bakeries generously donating food. Members of our community board and families were also in attendance.

The festival culminated in an energetic salsa dance, uniting staff and students in a resounding success.
