Mount Vernon STEAM Academy holds Black History Month Showcase featuring student performances

On Friday, February 28, 2025, Mount Vernon STEAM Academy held its annual Black History Month Showcase. 

Throughout the three sold-out lunch periods, STEAM dancers performed through different styles of dance like contemporary and Caribbean mashups, while other students played music on guitars such as “All of Me” by John Legend. Other students recited spoken word poetry about the importance of unity, and there was even an acting a skit to highlight deeper meanings of celebrating Black History Month.

Additionally, Dr. Cervantes, Spanish teacher at STEAM, performed an original song that she wrote. All the acts were tied to the theme of the show: African Americans and Labor. The show was hosted by seniors Kaylin Vidaurre and Kayla Humphrey.

STEAM Mock Trial Team wins first round of tournament

The Mount Vernon STEAM Academy Mock Trial Team competed in the first round of the Westchester County Bar Association’s Mock Trial Tournament.  The scholars at STEAM are competing against students from high schools throughout Westchester County.  On Thursday, February 27, students faced off against the Briarcliff High School Mock Trial Team.

STEAM Academy students compete in Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge

Students got a crash course in the stock market at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy, as Junior Achievement New York began working with them on the Take Stock in Your Future program. Students learned about stocks and began preparing for the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge during their meeting on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

STEAM Mock Trial Team formulates questions for mock trial competition

Mount Vernon STEAM Academy’s Mock Trial Team began crafting questions for the first case that they will argue in a competition during their meeting on Monday, January 13, 2025. The team, which started in November and is in its inaugural year, will be competing in the Westchester County Bar Association High School Mock Trial Competition later this year.

STEAM holds Winter Wonderland Wellness Fair

Mount Vernon STEAM Academy students participated in the Winter Wonderland Wellness Fair, a community building event, during their lunch periods on Thursday, December 19, 2024.
