Mount Vernon STEAM Academy scholars participate in STEAM Challenge Day
Mount Vernon STEAM Academy scholars participated in a variety of classroom challenges for STEAM Challenge Day on Wednesday, November 23, 2022. Students in classes throughout the school built different structures and competed to have the most structurally sound constructions.
One class created balloon boats and raced them, and math teachers challenged students to mathematical riddles. Some classes challenged students to create the tallest tower with marshmallows and pasta, and others challenged them to build the longest building.
Leonardo Pinto, an 11th-grade student, and his partner Jaylene Litchmore, a 12th-grade student, created the tallest pasta structure at the STEAM Academy. Leonardo spent multiple periods crafting his tower, and it reached the top of his head by the time he was done. Finally, it toppled over, but not before he won the STEAM challenge in his class.
These challenges are a fun way for students to incorporate engineering, math, physics and construction into their education. The competitive spirit drove students to work harder on their towers, and they learned about the science and mathematics of construction along the way.
