Mount Vernon STEAM Academy staff participate in team building
The excitement of the new school year at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy kicked off with a dynamic team-building activity. In this engaging activity, educators took on a STEAM Challenge on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
This creative endeavor required them to work together in groups to build a truss bridge using spaghetti and marshmallows in 20 minutes. The challenge fostered camaraderie and showcased the core principles of STEM education, emphasizing the vital 4 Cs: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. Through this hands-on experience, teachers bonded as a team and set a spirited tone for the academic year ahead.

On Thursday, June 22, 2023, 127 students graduated from Mount Vernon STEAM Academy. The graduation ceremony took place in the Phylicia Rashad Auditorium at Denzel Washington School of the Arts. Devita Mohandeo, an alumna of Thornton High School, delivered the keynote address.

Mount Vernon STEAM Academy held its Senior Awards Convocation on Tuesday, June 13, 2023. High achieving seniors were called up one by one and recognized for their accomplishments.

Rayanu Adam, Senior at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy, received the Gates Scholarship, a last-dollar scholarship that will cover the entire four years of college, including tuition, books, room, and board. This prestigious scholarship is only presented to 300 students per year. Rayanu will be attending Cornell University in the Fall of 2023 and plans to major in electrical engineering with a minor in robotics.

The Mount Vernon STEAM Academy's Principles of Biomedical Science classes participated in authentic, hands-on dissections this spring orchestrated by Mr. TJ Pufahl, biology teacher at STEAM.

Luis Barajas Alvarez and Evelyn Oseguera, seniors at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy, organized two blood drives in November 2022 and April 2023 and collected 65 pints of blood. They each received a $250 scholarship from the American Red Cross for their efforts.

Viviana Vallinas, a Mount Vernon STEAM Academy senior, has earned a full ride to the University of Pennsylvania. She applied for early decision on November 1, 2022, and officially accepted the academic scholarship on December 15.

On Friday, May 5, 2023, Mount Vernon STEAM Academy celebrated College Signing Day by inviting graduating seniors and teaching staff to wear their college gear to school. Teachers also took time during their lessons to discuss their college experience with students.
