Students recognized for academic achievements at STEAM

Mount Vernon STEAM Academy recognized about 200 students for their academic achievements on Friday, March 17, 2023. Principal’s Honor Roll was given to students who achieved a 95 average or above for the first two marking periods, High Honor Roll was given to students with an average between 90-94.99 and Honor Roll was given to students with an average between 85-89.99. 

“We are so proud of you,” said Lillian Serret-Morales, Acting Principal. “This is an accomplishment.”

Parents and guardians were also in attendance to celebrate their children. 

“This speaks to your hard work and the time you have put in to get to this point,” said Dr. Beverly Jones, Assistant Superintendent of Administration, Climate and Culture. “Great things are happening in our district.” 

Students were treated to a breakfast they enjoyed with their peers, family and staff members.

Tamera Tate winning scholarship

Tamera Tate, 11th grade student at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy, was awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the College Board in a ceremony on Thursday, March 2, 2023. Michelle Cosner, director of education and partnerships at the College Board presented the award. Tate’s mother, Paulette Warren, and twin sister, Tia Tate, were in attendance to celebrate her accomplishment.

Mount Vernon STEAM Academy hosted its annual Holiday Talent Show on Tuesday, December 21, 2022. The show was hosted by Kaylin Vidaurre, 10th grade Class President; Zaire Eddings, 12th grade Class President; and Kevin Middleton, English Language Arts teacher at STEAM

Cheers and groans slipped into the hallway from class 203 at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy as students tried to shoot the ball into the hoop. They were not playing basketball; however, they were playing grudge ball. Brittany Benjamin, who is as an English Language Arts teacher at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy, introduced the game as a fun way for her students to understand their readings for class. The class started a new round of their game on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, to review "Of Mice and Men," by John Steinbeck.

Mount Vernon STEAM Academy scholars participated in a variety of classroom challenges for STEAM Challenge Day on Wednesday, November 23, 2022. Students in classes throughout the school built different structures and competed to have the most structurally sound constructions.
