World AIDS Day assembly presented at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy
On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau partnered with Mount Vernon STEAM Academy to host the second annual World AIDS Day Assembly for juniors and seniors. The event featured a powerful presentation by guest speaker Justin Toro, an associate director at Montefiore Hospital, who shared valuable insights on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.
In addition, Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard made a special guest appearance, addressing the senior students about the ongoing HIV/AIDS crisis and emphasizing the importance of understanding the issue in their roles as informed and responsible young adults. The assembly aimed to educate students on the critical facts surrounding HIV/AIDS and inspire a greater sense of community responsibility.

Mount Vernon STEAM Academy’s Mock Trial Team began crafting questions for the first case that they will argue in a competition during their meeting on Monday, January 13, 2025. The team, which started in November and is in its inaugural year, will be competing in the Westchester County Bar Association High School Mock Trial Competition later this year.

On Friday, December 13, 2024, students and family members crowded into the Mount Vernon STEAM Academy auditorium to applaud over 280 scholars who made the honor roll or received perfect attendance during the first marking period.
One classroom at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy recently won 25 copies of the book “Solis” from the nonprofit organization We Need Diverse Books. Jennifer Vogel, teacher at STEAM, has actively supported the organization for years, and now her classes will be able to read a new book thanks to them.

Meredith Jaffess, Physical Educator at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy, hosted a Turkey Trot for staff in the early morning hours on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. Staff walked or jogged around the gym to burn calories moving into the Thanksgiving holiday.
